Dear SCaRF Supporter

Many thanks for all your support over the years which has meant that SCaRF can continue to punch above its weight. As a relatively small charity SCaRF is focused on skin cancer, its prevention, treatment and eventual cure and spends the money raised on projects as diverse as teaching schoolchildren to take care in the sun and cutting edge medical research.

SCaRF is well respected within the melanoma / medical research sector and has an excellent track record of funding projects at the forefront of research. We take a critical approach to choosing young researchers starting on innovative and ground breaking research projects which need seed corn funding to allow them to prove a concept and apply for larger grants. As such our money can multiply ten-fold as shown by a local research team in Bristol who have received several hundred thousand pounds over the years and raised several million as a result of our initial faith in their research ideas. Please check out details of what we have funded on our website  www.skin-cancer-research-fund.org.uk

As we all know these are difficult financial times and many charities are finding that incomes are being squeezed.  The demand for research grant funding has increased enormously in the last couple of years and SCaRF has given out more money for research than it has received in income.  The Trustees believe that it is right for them to do this – to put your kind donations and proceeds of fund-raising to the purpose for which they are intended - but in the longer term this is not sustainable and we do not wish to be put into a position of having to decline an approved application for funding solely on the grounds of insufficient funds.

This is where you come in….  Please can you raise some more money for SCaRF?

We really appreciate the many of you who think well of SCaRF and are active with various imaginative ways of raising money, but we are hoping that you can join us in making an extra effort to increase our income.  We can make a little go a long way and much of our funding does come from small donations from local groups holding small events so please keep up with the coffee mornings and book sales etc as well as new activities. We do have small furry mole mascots or pin badges that can be sold on any occasion, and our Christmas cards are now available for order.  You can make a very valuable donation by sending a cheque to the SCaRF office or using the on-line donation site www.justgiving.com but there is much added value if you can raise funds through activities because you also spread the word about SCaRF as you raise the money. You may have your own ideas for fund-raising, please let us know and try and come to our AGM on 12th October. We will feature your efforts and share your good ideas on the website.

With best wishes and thanks again for your support so far.
